I first heard about Kathryn Hudson, or Katy Perry as we’ve come to know her, when she came on the radio in my friend’s car on our way to the shore. My friend was singing the lyrics “I kissed a girl and I liked it/ The taste of her cherry Chapstick.”
I stared at her like she had gone insane. Who was this person — why was she singing about kissing a girl and why did my friend know the lyrics to her song?
And then Katy Perry herself came on the radio to promote her new album, One of the Boys. From what I remember of the interview, the newly famous singer came across as friendly, open and genuine — qualities that my jaded-personality thinks are rare in a Hollywood celebrity these days and usually catch my attention.
The girl crush had officially begun.
